SwipeLock: Physical Fuel Card Security for Fleets

FleetWage Team3 min read

What Is SwipeLock?

SwipeLock is a physical device that attaches to fleet fuel cards, preventing them from being swiped at in-store point-of-sale terminals. While fleet fuel cards are designed for fuel purchases, nothing stops a driver from swiping one inside a convenience store — unless you add a physical barrier.

That's exactly what SwipeLock does. The device allows the card to be inserted into fuel pump card readers (which use a different slot geometry) but physically blocks the card from sliding through the magnetic stripe readers used at checkout counters.

The Problem It Solves

Fleet fuel card misuse is one of the most common — and most underestimated — costs in fleet operations. It rarely looks like dramatic theft. Instead, it's a slow accumulation of small abuses:

  • In-store purchases: Snacks, drinks, cigarettes, and personal items charged to the company account. Each purchase is small, often under $20, but across a fleet they add up to hundreds per month.
  • Personal vehicle fueling: Drivers using fleet cards to fuel their personal vehicles on weekends or before and after shifts.
  • Buddy-fueling: Drivers sharing their fleet cards with friends or family members.

Many fleet operators estimate they lose $200-500 per driver per month to this kind of misuse. For a 30-driver fleet, that's potentially $6,000-$15,000 per month — or up to $180,000 per year.

Software controls can flag these transactions after the fact, but they can't prevent the purchase from happening. SwipeLock solves this at the physical level.

How SwipeLock Works

The concept is elegantly simple:

  1. Slide the device onto the fuel card — installation takes about 5 seconds per card, no tools required.
  2. The device locks in place — removing it requires a proprietary tool that stays with fleet management.
  3. Tamper-evident design — any attempt to remove the device without the proper tool leaves visible evidence.

Once installed, the card works normally at fuel pumps but physically cannot be swiped at in-store terminals. No batteries, no software, no connectivity required.

Key Features

Pump-Only Restriction

SwipeLock physically prevents fuel cards from being swiped at in-store POS terminals. Cards can only be used at fuel pumps where they belong.

Universal Compatibility

Works with any standard-size fuel card from WEX, Coast Pay, Sunoco, Comdata, and other major providers.

Durable Construction

Built from heavy-duty materials designed to withstand daily fleet use. Weather-resistant and tamper-evident.

Easy Installation

Simply slide the SwipeLock onto the fuel card. No tools, no training, no complicated setup.

Real-World Results

Fleet operators who have adopted SwipeLock alongside FleetWage's fuel card management report dramatic results. In-store purchases typically drop to zero on the first day of installation — not reduced, eliminated.

When combined with FleetWage's automated fuel transaction monitoring, which flags purchases at unusual times, off-route stations, and excessive fuel volumes, fleet operators get complete control over fuel spending from both the physical and digital sides.
